IBM Watson Health is ushering in the next era of health care by using Cognitive Computing to tackle some of the industry's most challenging problems - like revolutionizing how doctors research cancer and identifying new drugs to treat diseases. By making connections that may not have been previously considered, Watson can generate new insights that expedite the process of matching subjects to clinical trials and keep patient safe from the adverse effects of drugs.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Design Team Lead on our Oncology products, responsible for leading a multidisciplinary team including Research, UX and Visual Design.
Our environment is ever changing and requires a candidate who is flexible, thrives in ambiguity and can effectively collaborate across cross-functional groups and locations.


*Position will be located in Astor Place, New York City or Cambridge, MA

Responsibilities include:
  • Shape the strategy – Inform the product strategy/roadmap based on user needs and behaviors.
  • Manage the work – Break down and prioritize design projects into tasks for a multi-skilled design team, using agile methodologies.
  • Build creative culture – Foster a cross-functional team culture of transparent collaboration, where brilliant ideas are delivered quickly for feedback and iteration.
  • Critique and mentor – Review and critique the designs of a multi-skilled design team, shaping and improving the work while growing the designers.
  • Research – Participate in Design Research interviews and workshops (in person and remote)
  • Design – Develop and communicate interaction concepts to the larger team (wireframes, clickable prototypes, detailed annotations, etc.)
  • Validate – Participate in usability testing and design validation; synthesize user feedback and iterate the work based on this feedback.

Preferred candidates will possess the following attributes:
  • Communication – Facilitate understanding across functions and disciplines, be a natural storyteller with great presentation skills
  • Leadership – Advocate for human centered design, motivate and inspire teammates
  • Creativity & Innovation – Be creative, curious, questioning and strategic, with a ton of initiative
  • Design Thinking – Utilize critical thinking and problem solving methodologies for human-centered design
  • User Experience Design – Have expertise in the variety of skills needed for excellent UX Design: Information Design, Human Computer Interaction, Systems Thinking, User Interface Design, etc.
  • Agile Processes – Have substantial experience using Agile Principles within a design team



Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • 10+ years experience solving complex user problems
  • Portfolio and work samples including user-centered design skills, including flows, scenarios, personas, etc. (any fidelity), sketches to mid-fidelity interactions (show your process) and clickable prototypes (any fidelity)
  • Experience working on complex products with multiple user groups
  • At least 2 years of experience in Agile processes
  • English: Fluent


Preferred Tech and Prof Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree related to: Human Computer Interaction, User experience design, Human Factors, Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Science or related discipline.
  • Experience with Natural language processing or machine learning technology
  • Experience within the health care industry
  • Experience working with distributed teams
