Position Title: Senior Design Strategist
Product Area: Watson Health Life Sciences
Location: Austin, TX or Cambridge, MA (Boston)

Our environment is ever changing and requires a candidate who is flexible, thrives in ambiguity, and can effectively collaborate across cross-functional groups and locations. We’re looking for Designers with a passion for digging deep into user needs, identifying problems, and making visceral our user’s real problems. While the entire team is focused on doing what is best for the user, the Design Strategist is in many ways the “voice of the ecosystem” within our product teams.

As a Design Strategist it is imperative that you have foundational skills in Design Research, Visual, FED, or UX design.

Responsibilities include:
Interpret, synthesize and hypothesize with clarity. The Design Strategist role is critical in translating business requirements into hypotheses that you explore with users to uncover emotional connections, which are developed into actionable insights to drive both strategic and tactical decision-making. Design strategy as a discipline determines what to make and do, why do it and how to innovate contextually, both immediately and over the long-term. This process involves strategic design, the interplay between design and business strategy. Design strategy often uses qualitative and ethnographic methods to help ground the results and mitigate the risk of any course of action. This role will lead multi-disciplined group of designers through development and delivery of vision and how it relates to a strategic offering. It is responsible for communicating overall vision, influences people and organizations, including executive management and is accountable for decisions at the project level. In addition, this person would own development and delivery of designs for a project or sub-project, is responsible for communicating up through the product line or team, and reaches out to peers to seek critique to align across multiple project teams.
  • Service design and systems thinking
  • Concept maps and models, storyboards, interaction hierarchies, taxonomies, pattern libraries, workflows, and design specifications
  • Data analysis and insight development, research and evaluation
  • Facilitation skills to align teams around a human focused solution that can be delivered in a timely and financially responsible way

Required Skills:
  • At least 5-10 years’ experience conducting user research with responsibilities and skills similar to the list above
  • Portfolio/work samples at any fidelity including:
    • Information radiators such as personas, mental models, diagrams, etc.
    • Visualizations of complex user experiences: flows, scenarios, etc.
    • Early sketches to low-fidelity interactions (show your process)
  • At least 1 year of experience in Agile, Scrum and Lean
  • Experience working on complex products with multiple user groups

Preferred Skills:
  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field including HCI, Psychology, Interaction Design, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience working with distributed teams, even better if you have international experience
  • Data analysis and statistical analysis experience
  • Experience with natural language processing or artificial intelligence software


Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • At least 5-10 years’ experience conducting user research with responsibilities and skills similar to the list above
  • Portfolio/work samples at any fidelity including:
    • Information radiators such as personas, mental models, diagrams, etc.
    • Visualizations of complex user experiences: flows, scenarios, etc.
    • Early sketches to low-fidelity interactions (show your process)
  • At least 1 year of experience in Agile, Scrum and Lean
  • Experience working on complex products with multiple user groups
