Your Role and Responsibilities

As a technical writer in the WebSphere Application Server organization you’ll be in a fast paced role, responsible for designing and developing customer documentation and content for the WebSphere Application Server product portfolio. You will work with a diverse group of developers, designers, and testers in planning and delivering on time with tight schedules. As a technical writer you will have the opportunity to gain a sound theoretical and practical understanding of the technical details, and produce documentation that delights our customers. You will also advise the development team on style and language use within the product. The deliverables that you will work with cover a broad spectrum of mediums, including traditional text, guides, tutorials, samples, product embedded help, graphics, and social channels such as videos and blog posts.
What you’ll do:
The role is wide ranging, and you will have the opportunity to develop or hone skills in the following areas:
- Content design, authoring principles, and tools for creating high-quality information.
- Communication skills in making complex information relevant, useful, and attractive for users.
- Project Management in guiding squads to deliver content on time.
- IBM product knowledge, as you work hands-on with the products that you document.
- The build, test, and delivery processes that turn our source into client-ready output.
- Programming and scripting languages that drive flexibility and automation into our work.
- Globalization and accessibility.
The ideal candidate will have:
- A passion for communicating effectively. You need to cultivate an understanding of the customer, the technology, and the product to be able to explain or visualize complex concepts clearly and simply.
- An interest in technology. You must want to work with the products that you’re describing, and learn to troubleshoot issues as you try out scenarios and tasks.
- Excellent collaboration skills. You need to build effective relationships with a broad set of colleagues in order to receive and present the very best information.
- Creativity. You need to identify the best ways of presenting information. You can also help improve aspects of our process.
- Flexibility. You need to prioritize tasks, be able to quickly switch between them, and to adjust to changes in the world of content delivery.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- 3+ years Designing software documentation
- 3+ years Developing software documentation for delivery in a documentation framework, such as IBM Knowledge Center, including tools and build processes
- Professional quality writing and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to consistently deliver professional quality documentation on time
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a group
- Experience in developing software documentation from technical documents such as specifications and from using the product
- Experience in publishing documentation
- Experience working in an agile, squad-based, continuous delivery development model
- Experience writing for globalization, accessibility, and IBM style guidelines
- Experience with documentation tools and documentation frameworks (DITA, Markdown
- Oxygen editor, Acrolinx, DCS, IBM Knowledge Center, IBM Cloud documentation)
- Experience with team collaboration tools, including GitHub, ZenHub, Box, Slack
- Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Communications with a concentration in writing software documentation
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
- Experience as a developer, tester, or customer support person for software products
- Experience managing a small team of writers
- Working knowledge about creating/editing images, videos, and other multi-media uses for product documentation
- Masters Degree in Technical Communications with a concentration in writing software documentation
- Programming experience with object oriented languages such as Java a plus
- A major or minor in computer science a plus
